John joined the Butler University Police Department in 2015, after working with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) for 40 years in various positions in Operations, Investigations, and Administration. John served as Homeland Security Supervisor for IMPD, coordinating stadium security for Super Bowl XLVI, and also was District Commander and Deputy Chief of Operations.

John is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He is a former Indianapolis Police Department Police Officer of the Year, a recipient of the American Legion Spartan Award for Valor, and a recipient of the Webber Seavey Award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police, presented by Attorney General Janet Reno, for Community Policing Excellence.

John was born and raised in Indianapolis, is married and a father of 3.

I am currently assigned as Captain of Operations for the Butler University Police Department. I have been in law enforcement since January 2000. I started my career with the City of Gary where I served in several capacities. I served as a field training officer for 6 years where I trained newly appointed officers. I also served as a D.A.R.E. officer, Community oriented policing officer, training coordinator and finished my career there as a Detective Corporal. I have served the Butler University community since late 2008. I hired in as a patrol officer before I was promoted to Detective Sergeant. I then served as a Patrol Sergeant for 5 years before taking my current position.

Captain Roy M. Betz, was appointed to the Butler University Police Department (BUPD) in 2012. Prior to his appointment with BUPD, he was an Indiana State Police, Capitol Police Section Sergeant/Officer. He served with the Indiana State Police from 1991-1995, then again from 2002 to 2012. With the Indiana State Police he was instrumental in the training and development of new officers. He has experience in command, Emergency Management, patrol, communications, investigations, and training. He currently is an Indiana Law Enforcement Board Certified instructor and has attended the Force Science Institute, to become a certified Force Science Analyst, 2014. He has a strong belief in training and has held numerous law enforcement training classes. Captain Betz has been an Honorary Instructor at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. 

Captain Betz holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, emphasizing Homeland Security, and an Associate’s Degree in Business from Indiana Wesleyan University.
 He is currently the Captain of Police Administration for BUPD. 

Officer Grimes joined the Butler University Police Department in 2018.  Prior to this, Officer Grimes retired from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department after 25 years of service having attained the rank of sergeant.  Officer Grimes is an Honors Graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and is an Indiana Law Enforcement Instructor.  Officer Grimes is also an International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA) Instructor.  Officer Grimes continues to hold two police cyclist schools each year where law enforcement officers are trained on how to perform their duties on a bicycle.

Officer Grimes has held many positions throughout his career including, road patrol supervisor, adult programs coordinator, field training officer, field training supervisor & Community Relations Supervisor. Officer Grimes has also undergone additional training in Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) & Integrating Communications, Assessment and Tactics (ICAT) Instructor.  Officer Grimes is currently the Community Relations Officer for BUPD.  Officer Grimes enjoys meeting and speaking with the wonderful students, faculty & staff here at Butler University.

Officer Grimes has resided in Indianapolis his entire life.  Officer Grimes holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Indiana University with a minor in Sociology & Public Affairs.

I started my career in public safety in 1989 with Burns InternationalSecurity (BIS), until 1991, BIS provided public safety to the Butler campus.While employed at BIS, I served as a security officer, dispatcher, patrol officer and finally shift supervisor. When Butler moved its public safety operations inhouse I joined the department as a patrol officer. In 1994 I was promoted to corporal and by 1995 I was promoted to shift sergeant. I graduated from theMarion County Sheriff Reserve in 1993. In 1996 I graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) .

Since attending ILEA, I have participated in the following training programs:

IPD Basic and Advanced Firearms course, Glock Armorer’s course, Indiana Department of Toxicology, Weapons of Mass Destruction, Managing Civil Action, Sexual Assault Investigations, Instructor Development, Police Supervisor Management, Leadership and Liability, Strategies and Tactics of Patrol Stop Instructor, and Advanced Indiana Data and Communication Systems.

Prior to becoming a Police Officer, Sergeant Crawn was a Case Manager working in community mental health.  He provided services to children and their families and was a member of the Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program that addressed substance abuse.

He received his B.S. in Psychology from Indiana State University in 2001.  He has completed coursework for a M.S.degree in Psychology from ISU, but changed career paths before completing his Master’s Project.  His involvement in the higher education community as an undergraduate student, graduate student, Instructor and Police Officer has given him a unique perspective. Having been a President and Historian of both social and honors Fraternities respectively, and through experiences with the Indiana State University African American Studies program, he understands the concept of the student experience and how it means something different for each individual. As a Police Officer, these things have enabled him to respond to situations and contribute to investigations, education, prevention, and planning in ways that may seem unconventional to others without similar experiences.

Sergeant Crawn began his law enforcement career in 2005 with the Indiana State University Police Department and graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Basic Course.   He was involved in assignments including Field Training Officer, Counselor for the Jr. Police Academy, “1 in 4” Campus Adviser (Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention), and Adopt-A-Hall Officer.  He was also hired by the Department of Physical Education as the Martial Arts Program Coordinator for the fall of 2007.

In 2008, he became an Officer in the City of Terre Haute Police Department. He learned to manage the many challenges of policing a large urban population that included a diverse community of residents, businesses and educational institutions. He served as a Hostage Negotiator, Ground Fighting and Physical Tactics Instructor, Bike Patrol Officer, Certified Drug Recognition Expert and was an active participant in Operation Pull-Over and Safe Driving Campaigns.

In 2013, Sgt. Crawn was hired by the Butler University Police Department.  He served in the Patrol Division and was part of a proactive Night Shift unit.  He served as an ILEA Physical Tactics Instructor for the Department. He also graduate with honors from the 2013 Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Leadership Academy.  At the end of the 2015-16 school year he was promoted to the position of Detective and was active in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Indiana.  In 2017 he completed the FBI Crisis Negotiation Course through the Indianapolis Field Office.  In February 2018 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, and returned to the Patrol Division to supervise a night shift. In December 2020 he graduated from the first cohort of the Master of Science in Risk & Insurance program in the Lacy School of Business at Butler University. Sgt. Crawn understands and respects the high expectations for professionalism and level of service that are incumbent upon Officers in elite institutions of higher education.  He has great reverence for the public trust bestowed on the Law Enforcement Community and is motivated by the mission of educating, serving and protecting the Butler community.

Sergeant Downs was appointed by the Butler University Police Department in 2008. He holds an Associate of Applied Science degree from Eastern Gateway Community College. He graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in 1997. Before coming to Butler, he worked for the Indiana Capitol Police Department and the New Castle Indiana Police Department. Throughout his career, he has received multiple awards for service including Officer of the Year at the New Castle Indiana Police Department. He has started two K-9 units and currently serves as the department’s EOD K-9 Trainer/Handler. His current partner, Bear, is an English Labrador Retriever and is certified in bomb detection through the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, American Working Dogs, and has successfully passed the ATF National Odor Recognition Testing (NORT).   

I joined the United States Marine Crops right out of high school.  Served four years in the military getting to travel to several different countries.  After serving in the military, I returned home and started a career in Information Technologies.  I did that for several years and then decided that a career in Law Enforcement was what I really wanted. 

I began that career in 2008 with the Marion County Sheriffs Office.  I was with the MCSO for nine years, during which I held several different positions.  In 2018 I was hired on with Butler University Police Department.  I completed the Indiana Law Enforcement academy in 2019. Since Joining the BUPD, I have been on late shift all four years.  In 2022 I was promoted to Sergeant.

       Hello    I started my public safety carrier after graduating from Eastern Kentucky University on 12/28/1987 by joining the Indianapolis Police Department.   After completing the training phase I was assigned to East District Late shift, were I remained for 13 years till 2001 when I was placed on the East District Neighborhood unit, were I remained for 10 years working with community leaders across East District.  After leaving the unit I returned to East Lates to finish My carrier on 08/25/2022.   I have currently been a Butler University Officer since 08/29/2022 and at home on the campus were my mother and daughter have graduated from.            

 Detective Lorraine Oguz was appointed to the Butler University Police Department (BUPD) in April 2018. She began her law enforcement career in 2009 and is currently assigned to BUPD Investigations as a Detective. She is a certified emergency vehicle operation (EVO) instructor, a trained as a Crisis Intervention Officer (CIT) and part of the Clery Compliance Team. Detective Oguz is honored to serve the students, faculty, staff, and visitors at Butler University. 

Joined the United States Marine Corps in May 1981.  Honorably Discharged in May 1985.  Joined Indianapolis Police Department January of 1986. Worked road patrol for three years and  then became a Field Training Officer for eleven years working the North Side of Indianapolis. Started working in investigations in January of 2000 as general detective for North District.  Transferred to IPD Homicide July of 2001.  Became late shift Homicide Supervisor February of 2011.  Retired IMPD and joined BUPD in June of 2017 as officer.  January 2018 began working BUPD Investigations.  July 2022 became BUPD Investigation Supervisor and during BUPD restructuring became Investigations Supervisor and Butler University Clery Coordinator.    

Detective Courtney White was appointed to the Butler University Police Department (BUPD) in August 2014. She graduated the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in December 2009 and began her career as a Patrol Officer with the Indiana State Police – Capitol Police Section, where she worked for five years prior to joining BUPD. Through the years she has severed as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Crisis Intervention Officer, Bike Patrol Certified Officer, ISP Camp Counselor, and served as an ISP-Capitol Public Information Officer. She has been detailed to the Undercover Gang Unit with the State Police at the Indiana Fair Grounds and worked alongside the IMPD Homeless Unit during her time spent working in downtown Indianapolis. She has taken part in a variety of programs, undergone many training courses throughout her career, and works in partnership with Special Olympics Indiana. She serves as a Law Enforcement General Instructor and is one of the few Certified R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) Self-Defense Instructors for BUPD. She is currently assigned to BUPD Investigations as a Detective. 

Officer Scott Carter comes to BUPD from the Franklin Police Department where he retired at the rank of Captain after 20 years. Throughout those years, Officer Carter held many positions and ranks in both the Investigations and Road Division. In the Training Division he served as the Field Training Officer Coordinator and a State certified Advance Driving Instructor for the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.  Officer Carter also instructed Taser, Pepper Ball, Stop Sticks and First aid.  

Officer Jim Hoeing was appointed to the Butler University Police Department in 2024 after retiring from the Franklin Police Department.  Officer Hoeing retired as a Shift Commander, with 27 years of service at Franklin.  He looks forward to continuing his career at Butler University.

Officer Jimmy Laws started with Indianapolis PD in 2001 as a PSO (PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER).  His duties were Transporting Officer (Wagon Driver) and A.I. (Accident Investigator). During this time, Off. Laws assisted officers with property damage and personal injury accidents, transporting arrestees to the Marion County Jail and Juvenile Center, runaways to Youth Emergency Services (YES), and mental and emotional subjects to Community North, East, South and Wishard Hospitals. Off. Laws also attended IPD’s E/T School (Evidence Technician). Off. Laws assisted officers in preserving and properly collecting evidence on several crime scenes.  In 2003, Off. Laws worked at the APC (Arrestee Processing Center) while working on IPD’s reserve department as an Reserve Officer. In 2006, Off. Laws was hired on as a CMPD officer (Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department). Off. Laws worked his way up to Lieutenant at CMPD.  Off. Laws has twenty-two years of experience as a E/T working closely with the IMPD photo unit, Marion County Crime Lab, Indiana State Police Crime Lab and the IMPD Latent Print Lab.  He assisted with multiple crime scenes, fallen officer memorials, funerals, honors, autopsies, public relations, community events and department celebrations.   Off. Jimmy Laws is excited to continue his career with the Butler University Police Department as a night shift patrol officer.

I was appointed to the Butler University Police Department (BUPD) in 2018.  I am currently assigned to Day Shift.  I began my law enforcement career with Indianapolis Police Department/Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and retired as a Sergeant after 34 years.  Detective Courtney White and I are responsible for BUPD’s Diversion Program.

I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Ball State University in 1984.

 I was appointed to Butler University Police Department in 2021 after retiring from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department / Marion County Sheriffs Department with 25 years of service. I am very proud to be completing my law enforcement career serving the Butler Community.    

Officer Priami has been with the Butler University Police Department since 2020.  He retired from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in 2020 after 24 years of service.  He is a graduate from Ball State University with a bachelors of science degree in Criminal Justice.  Officer Priami has received several awards over his Policing career including the Carnegie Hero award, Man of the Year award and is in the Red Cross hall of fame.  He enjoys fishing, travelling and spending time with his family.  

I was appointed to the Butler University Police Department in November of 2022 after retiring from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department with 34 years of service.  I am proud to be completing my law enforcement career serving the Butler Community.  

  Officer Weilhamer is married and has 2 beautiful children. She started her police career by first being a daughter of a police officer. She wanted to be able to help people the way her father had. Her first job was as a civilian with the Indianapolis Police Department as a fingerprint analyst. She processed prisoners and searched fingerprint matches on crimes committed. She was hired and served on the Indianapolis Police Department Reserve Unit which was a voluntary, unpaid police position, serving the citizens of Indianapolis. 

  Officer Weilhamer was then hired as a Merit Officer with the Indianapolis Police Department. While serving in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department she was on the Chief’s Honor Guard where she served 20 years. She served on a prestigious group called the Peer Officer Support Team (POST) where she served for 20 years. This group was formed to assist officers who were involved in police action shootings and other traumatic events during their careers. She was a Field Training Officer for over 18 years, teaching and helping new officers get acclimated to police work. She retired from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department after 22 years of service.

  Officer Weilhamer was appointed to the Butler University Police Department in 2019. She currently represents Butler University singing the National Anthem at several events which include the Indiana Fever Games, the NCAA Women’s Final Basketball Tournament, several Cops events, for the Central Indiana Police Foundation and Indiana Local and State Memorial services.

  Officer Weilhamer likes singing, cooking, making cakes, sewing costumes, doing embroidery, and using a Cricket machine.  She also enjoys animals, she has a few.

Officer Randy Wray was appointed to Butler University Police Department in 2017. Prior to his appointment to BUPD, he served in the United States Marine Corps, Middletown Police Department, Henry County SWAT, and Pike Township Police Department. Officer Wray serves as BUPD’s firearms, less lethal, and tactics instructor. He is certified as an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Firearms Instructor, Federal Law Enforcement Training Center Active Shooter Threat Instructor, Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events Instructor, and a R.A.D. (Rape, Aggression, Defense) Instructor. 

Officer Rob Cook was appointed to the Butler University Police Department in 2019. He attended Ball State University. Before coming to Butler he worked for the Indianapolis Police Department and retired after 26 years of service. While with the IMPD, Officer Cook was on the Mounted Patrol, a Field Training Officer (FTO), a member of the Emergency Response Team and was a Sergeant at the time of retirement.

Communications Officer Sullivan grew up in the town of Speedway. She started out her career with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department where she worked multiple different jobs, from organizing records for the homicide office to working in the property room. She has worked in public safety since 2017. She has aspirations to become a police officer with Butler University Police Department. Helping people is what she truly loves to do. 

Prior to my time here with Butler University Police Department, I spent 10 years working in the Marion County Small Claims Court system.  During my time with the Small Claims Courts, I served many roles.  I eventually served as Chief Court Clerk with my division, where I assisted the Judge with many day-to-day tasks.  I enjoy serving the Public, which is why I fit in here with the Butler University community.

Fun fact: My favorite hobby is roller skating.  I work part time at a skating rink, and I spent many years playing roller derby.
